The “Effortless” Oven-Cleaning Trick Everyone Is Sharing — Here’s What Actually Works on Burnt-On Grease

However, don’t automatically cover every part of the oven with it.

Heating elements, fans, electrical components, door seals, catalytic liners, and some self-cleaning surfaces may require different care. Your oven’s manual should take priority over any viral cleaning hack.

Why You Shouldn’t Bake a Dishwasher Pod

This is where the viral version becomes questionable.

Dishwasher detergent is designed to operate under very specific conditions inside a dishwasher. Putting a pod in an oven and then heating it is an unnecessary experiment.

Even if someone online claims they have done it dozens of times, that doesn’t establish that it’s safe for every detergent formulation or every oven.

There’s another problem: residue.

Anything used inside an oven needs to be thoroughly removed before you cook food again. Leaving detergent or cleaner behind on an interior surface that later becomes very hot is exactly what you want to avoid.

Don’t Mix Household Cleaners

More cleaner does not necessarily mean more cleaning power.

Avoid improvising mixtures of oven cleaner, bleach, ammonia, dishwasher detergent, vinegar, or other household chemicals. Some combinations can release dangerous gases or cause irritating reactions.

Use one appropriate cleaning product at a time and follow its label.

The Forgotten Step That Makes Future Cleaning Easier

The easiest burnt grease to remove is the grease that hasn’t been baked another ten times.

Once the oven is cool after cooking, wipe up fresh spills when practical. If something bubbles over during baking, wait until the oven has cooled before cleaning it rather than allowing the spill to remain through several more cooking cycles.

For removable racks, soaking them separately in warm soapy water can save a great deal of scrubbing.

And if your oven has a self-cleaning, steam-cleaning, catalytic, or pyrolytic function, check the manufacturer’s instructions before using homemade methods. Different oven interiors are designed differently.
