Taking A Spoonful Of Honey Before Sleeping: How Does It Work?
That doesn’t mean honey kills every infection.
It doesn’t replace medical treatment when someone is seriously ill.
But as a simple soothing measure for an uncomplicated cough, honey has a much stronger basis than many of the extraordinary claims attached to it online.
There’s One Extremely Important Exception: Babies
Never give honey to a child younger than 12 months.
Honey can contain spores of Clostridium botulinum, which can cause infant botulism.
An older child’s or adult’s digestive system can generally handle exposure differently, but an infant’s developing intestinal system creates a particular vulnerability.
This rule applies even to small amounts.
Don’t add honey to an infant’s food, water, formula, or pacifier as a home remedy.
After the first birthday, honey can generally be introduced as a food, barring individual medical considerations.
Does Honey Actually Make You Sleep Better?
This is where the evidence becomes much less impressive than the headlines.
You’ll sometimes see claims that honey “feeds the brain overnight,” raises insulin just enough to release tryptophan, increases serotonin, produces melatonin, and therefore creates perfect sleep.
The biological story sounds convincing.
But a plausible biological mechanism isn’t the same thing as strong clinical evidence that taking a spoonful of honey every night meaningfully improves insomnia.
Some people may find warm tea with honey relaxing.
Others associate honey with a comforting bedtime ritual.
And if honey reduces an irritating cough, sleeping better because you’re coughing less certainly makes sense.
But honey shouldn’t be presented as a proven treatment for chronic insomnia.
If you regularly struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep, the cause deserves more attention than a jar in the kitchen.
Will Honey Keep Your Blood Sugar Stable All Night?
Be careful with this claim.
Because honey contains sugar, it can raise blood glucose.
It shouldn’t automatically be marketed as a nighttime blood-sugar stabilizer.
