My Roommate Put the Wrong Thing in My Brand-New Slow Cooker—Minutes Later, the Ceramic Insert Was Destroyed

Large frozen pieces of meat shouldn’t automatically be tossed into a slow cooker.

Slow cookers heat gradually, so frozen meat may spend too long warming through temperatures where bacteria can multiply before the food reaches a safe cooking temperature.

Thawing meat safely in the refrigerator first is generally the better approach unless your specific recipe and appliance instructions explicitly support cooking the food from frozen.


Not Everything That Fits Belongs Inside

People have used slow cookers for all sorts of internet experiments: heating wax, making crafts, warming nonfood materials, melting questionable substances, and attempting DIY projects.

That’s a bad habit to copy blindly.

A food slow cooker should generally remain a food appliance.


Unknown materials can melt, release fumes, damage the glaze, create difficult-to-remove residues, or present a fire hazard.

And once a ceramic insert has suffered serious cracking or structural damage like the one shown here, continuing to cook with it isn’t worth the risk.

What Should You Do With a Crock That Looks Like This?

If your slow-cooker insert has a major crack, missing section, severe chipping, or obvious structural failure, stop using that insert.


Don’t try to repair a food-contact crock with household glue or epoxy and then return it to cooking duty. Heat, moisture, repeated expansion, and food contact make this very different from repairing a decorative ceramic object.

Instead, unplug the appliance, allow everything to cool completely, and check the model number.

The manufacturer may sell an approved replacement crock. If not, replacing the entire slow cooker may be safer than improvising with an insert that wasn’t designed for that heating base.

The Lesson I Learned From My First Slow Cooker


Slow cookers are wonderfully simple appliances, but “simple” doesn’t mean indestructible.

The ceramic insert is designed to work within a particular range of conditions. Avoid sudden temperature changes, direct stovetop heat unless explicitly approved, incompatible containers or materials, and damaged stoneware.
