My cheating husband kicked me out without letting me take my clothes—weeks later, his mistress wore my late mom’s dress…

“Give it to me,” he repeated.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Copies of what?”

Ryan reached for the envelope.

She stepped backward.

That was when I understood something almost funny.

For three weeks Vanessa had treated me like the defeated wife.

She believed Ryan had chosen her because she was younger, prettier, more exciting.

She believed she had inherited my home, my closet and apparently even my memories.

But suddenly she realized there might be an entire side of Ryan’s life she knew nothing about.

“What’s on this?” she asked me.

“Ask him.”

Ryan’s voice hardened.

“Don’t start this.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“He told you the house belongs only to him, didn’t he?”

She didn’t answer.

“He probably told you I contributed nothing.”

Still nothing.

“He told you I was trying to take his money in the divorce.”

Her eyes moved toward Ryan.

That was enough.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

“The house was purchased during our marriage,” I said. “And some of the money used for the down payment and later renovations came from funds connected to my inheritance. What that ultimately means legally is for the attorneys to sort out. Ryan doesn’t get to decide ownership by changing a lock.”

Ryan put his glass down.

“This isn’t the place.”

“You made it the place when you let her walk in wearing my mother’s dress.”

Nobody nearby was pretending not to listen anymore.

Vanessa stared at the USB drive.

Then she asked the question Ryan clearly didn’t want her to ask.

“Why are you scared of this?”

“I’m not.”

“You look scared.”

He reached for her arm.

“Vanessa.”

She pulled away.

And that’s when I said the sentence that changed the entire evening.

“Ask him about Hawthorne Consulting.”

Ryan froze.

Vanessa stared at him.

“What is Hawthorne Consulting?”

He looked at me with pure anger.

I had seen that name repeatedly on our financial records.

Transfers to a business account.

Payments marked as consulting expenses.

At first, I assumed it belonged to one of Ryan’s vendors.

Then my attorney’s financial investigator discovered something interesting.

The company had been organized only eighteen months earlier.

And the mailing address connected to its registration wasn’t an office building.

It was an apartment.

Vanessa’s apartment.

She looked at Ryan.

“My address?”

Ryan said nothing.

Her voice dropped.

“Ryan, why is there a company registered using my address?”

That was when Vanessa stopped being my enemy for a moment.

Because I saw genuine confusion on her face.

She didn’t know.

Ryan had apparently told her he’d helped set up something “for tax purposes.” She had signed documents he placed in front of her without fully understanding what they were.

That didn’t make her innocent of everything she’d done to me.
