My Brother With Down Syndrome Offered to Walk Me Down the Aisle After Our Dad Died. My MIL Was the…

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Oh God.”

“He thinks he’s done something wrong.”

Daniel stood immediately.

“Where are you going?”

“To see Nathan.”

I Didn’t Go With Him

That conversation belonged to them.

Daniel returned two hours later.

His eyes were red.

He sat beside me on the couch.

“What happened?”

“I apologized.”

“And?”

“He made me practice.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

Daniel started laughing.

Apparently Nathan had accepted his apology, then announced Daniel also needed aisle practice because “grooms stand wrong sometimes.”

For nearly an hour, Nathan instructed my future husband where to stand, when to turn, and how not to block the photographer.

Then, before Daniel left, Nathan had asked one question.

“Your mom doesn’t like me?”

My heart sank.

“What did Daniel say?”

“He told him the truth.”

Not the cruel details.

Just enough.

Daniel told Nathan his mother had said something unkind and unfair.

Nathan was quiet for a while.

Then he said:

“Maybe she’s nervous.”

That was Nathan.

Someone insulted him, and his first instinct was to wonder whether they were having a difficult day.

Daniel cried telling me that.

Wedding Morning Arrived

I woke before my alarm.

For several seconds, I forgot what day it was.

Then I saw my dress hanging across the room.

Dad should have been there.

That was my first thought.

Not the flowers.

Not Daniel.

Not the ceremony.

Dad.

Mom came into my room around seven carrying coffee.

Neither of us mentioned him.

We didn’t need to.

At eleven, Nathan arrived.

He wore a black suit.

Dad’s navy tie.

And the expression of a man preparing for a military operation.

“Ready?” I asked.

He nodded.

“I practiced.”

“I heard.”

“Daniel practiced too.”

“So I’ve been told.”

“He needs more.”

I laughed so hard I nearly ruined my makeup.

Claire was already photographing everything.

Nathan straightening Dad’s tie.

Mom pinning his boutonniere.

Nathan checking his watch even though we weren’t late.

None of it was staged.

Exactly as I’d requested.

Then My Mother-in-Law Arrived

She looked beautiful.

Elegant blue dress.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

For one brief second, I wondered if perhaps we’d all simply move forward.

Then she saw Nathan.

Her smile tightened.

She looked at me.

Then Daniel.

Then the photographer.

She didn’t say anything.

That was probably wise.

The ceremony coordinator called everyone into position.

Guests took their seats.

The music began.

And suddenly I was standing behind closed church doors with Nathan beside me.

My heart started pounding.

He noticed.

“Don’t be scared.”

I laughed shakily.

“I’m not scared.”

“You’re squeezing my arm.”

I loosened my grip.

“Sorry.”

Nathan looked straight ahead.

Then he said something I will remember for the rest of my life.

“Dad would cry.”

That nearly destroyed me.

“Yes.”

“He’d say your dress cost too much.”

I burst out laughing.

Dad absolutely would have said that.

The doors opened.

Nathan Didn’t Miss a Single Step

Not one.

He walked slowly.

Not too slowly.

His arm stayed steady beneath mine.

Halfway down the aisle, I heard someone sniff.

Then another.

Mom was openly crying.

My uncle wasn’t doing much better.

And Daniel?

Daniel was standing at the altar with tears running down his face.
