What’s the Tiny Hole in a Safety Pin Really For? The Answer Is Simpler—and Smarter—Than Most People Think

That little coil helps make the system possible.

What About Using It for Thread?

This is where online explanations often become confusing.

You’ll sometimes see people say:

“The hole is there so you can put thread through it.”

You certainly can pass suitable thread or cord through some safety-pin loops.

But treating that as the universal original purpose oversimplifies the design.

The structural explanation is much more fundamental:

the circular section is the coil that provides spring action and flexibility to the safety pin.

Threading something through the resulting opening is a convenient additional use.

And There’s Another Safety-Pin Trick Worth Knowing

If you’ve ever needed to replace a hoodie drawstring or put elastic back into a waistband, a safety pin can be extremely useful.

Attach the safety pin securely to one end of the elastic or cord.

Close the pin.

Feed it into the fabric casing.

Then work the pin through the tunnel of fabric little by little until it emerges from the other opening.

The safety pin gives your fingers something rigid to grip through the fabric.

It’s an old sewing trick that remains useful today.

Interestingly, you don’t need the tiny coil opening for this—the entire safety pin becomes the tool.

Why Do Viral Posts Say “98% of People Don’t Know”?

Because curiosity works.

Give people an everyday object they’ve seen their entire lives, circle one tiny feature in red, and ask:

“Do you know what THIS is for?”

Suddenly everyone wants the answer.

The percentage itself usually isn’t meaningful unless it’s backed by an actual survey.

There’s no reason to assume literally 98% of people don’t understand a safety pin’s construction.

But the basic observation is still fun because many of us genuinely never stop to examine ordinary objects.

The Real Answer

That mysterious-looking circle isn’t hiding an astonishing forgotten household secret.
