That tension helps keep the point seated inside the protective clasp.

And that clasp is what gives the safety pin its name.

Unlike an ordinary straight pin, the sharp point is tucked away when the pin is closed.

Simple idea.


Very clever engineering.

So Why Does the Loop Look Like a Deliberate Hole?

Because mechanically, that’s what happens when the wire is curled.

The wire travels around a small circular path and continues into the other arm of the pin.


The center remains empty.

From the outside, it looks like somebody deliberately punched a hole into the device.

But there is no separate plate with a hole drilled through it.

It’s simply the geometry of the bent wire.


That’s an important distinction because viral posts often claim:

“Manufacturers put this secret hole here for a purpose nobody knows!”

That’s misleading.

The loop itself has a purpose.


The empty space inside it is largely a consequence of that design.

Can You Still Use the Hole?

Certainly.

People have found all kinds of secondary uses for the loop.


For example, depending on the size and style of the safety pin, people sometimes pass thread, cord, ribbon, or another small object through it.

Safety pins themselves are also commonly used as improvised bodkins for pulling elastic or drawstrings through fabric casings.

But that’s different from claiming the center opening was invented specifically as a secret threading hole.

A useful secondary application doesn’t necessarily explain why a feature originally exists.


Think About a Paper Clip

A paper clip contains several empty spaces.

You could thread string through those openings.

You could attach a label to them.


You could even hang something from one.

But that doesn’t mean the empty spaces were individually invented for those purposes.

They’re consequences of bending wire into a shape that provides the function designers wanted.
