Most people think of Alzheimer’s disease as a condition that begins with obvious memory problems—forgetting names, repeating questions, or losing track of appointments. But researchers have also studied a much less obvious change that can occur early in some people: a declining sense of smell.
That is where the shower connection comes in.
During a shower, we are surrounded by familiar scents: shampoo, soap, conditioner, body wash, shaving products, and other toiletries. If someone who previously noticed these smells clearly begins having persistent difficulty recognizing them, it may be worth paying attention.
However, there is an important catch: losing your sense of smell does not mean you have Alzheimer’s disease.
The Unexpected Connection Between Smell and the Brain
Our ability to smell depends on a complex pathway connecting the nose with several areas of the brain.
Some of those brain regions are also involved in memory and emotion. Research has found that impaired odor identification can occur in people experiencing cognitive decline, including some people who later develop Alzheimer’s disease.
A person might notice that familiar fragrances seem weaker, have trouble identifying an odor, or fail to recognize smells they once knew immediately.
Imagine using the same strongly scented shampoo for years.
You open the bottle in the shower and suddenly realize:
“I can barely smell this anymore.”
If this happens once, it probably means very little. Congestion alone can temporarily affect smell.
But if the change persists—especially alongside changes in memory or thinking—it deserves more attention.
Why the Shower Might Make the Change Noticeable
The shower itself isn’t an Alzheimer’s test.
Rather, showering happens to expose us to several strong and familiar scents at once.
Soap, shampoo and other products provide an everyday opportunity to notice whether your sense of smell seems different.
