I Paid $4 for a Stranger’s Birthday Cake at the Grocery Store — What I Found in My Pocket Minutes…

Maybe her mother had given it to her.

Whatever the story was, it was obviously worth far more than four dollars.

I couldn’t keep it.

But I also couldn’t simply drive around searching apartment buildings for a child.

So the following morning, I returned to the store.

I gave my phone number to the manager.

“If she comes back, please call me.”

Then I waited.

Three days passed.

Nothing.

Five days.

Nothing.

On the sixth afternoon, my phone rang.

“Is this the gentleman looking for the girl with the birthday cake?”

I nearly dropped the phone.

“Yes.”

“She just came in.”

I was in my car within two minutes.

Her Name Was Lily

When I reached the store, she was sitting on a bench near the entrance.

She looked terrified.

The manager had apparently told her only that someone wanted to return something.

When she saw me, she immediately looked down.

I sat several feet away.

“You left something in my pocket.”

She didn’t answer.

I held out the locket.

Her eyes filled.

“I wanted you to have it.”

“Why?”

“Because you helped me.”

“You don’t owe me anything.”

“But Mom says you always give something back.”

I looked at the locket.

“Did your mother give you this?”

She nodded.

“Then this belongs with you.”

She wouldn’t take it.

So I asked:

“What if returning this is my kindness?”

That made her look up.

After several seconds, she reached for it.

She held it against her chest.

“Thank you.”

“How’s your mom?”

Her face fell.

“She’s still there.”

“Where?”

“The hospital.”

I Never Expected What Happened Next

Lily told me her mother, Rebecca, had been seriously ill for months.

Her grandmother was taking care of her, but money was tight.

The birthday cake had been Lily’s idea.

She had saved whatever she could.

Coins from the couch.

Change from grocery trips.

A few dollars she’d earned helping a neighbor.

She thought she had enough.

She hadn’t calculated the tax correctly.

That was the missing four dollars.

“Did she get the cake?”

Lily smiled.

“She cried.”

“Good tears?”

She nodded.

“Very good tears.”

Then she said something I’ll never forget.

“She said it tasted expensive.”

I laughed.

“So the four dollars improved it?”
