He even offered me money to “keep my mouth shut.” But instead, his wife and I planned a surprise he’d…

She looked at me.

“Would you mind telling him what you told me on Friday?”

I took a breath.

“Mark said he knew I was saving money for my sister’s surgery. He offered to cover the entire amount if I agreed to come here with him and keep everything secret.”

Linda’s face tightened.

She already knew the story, but hearing it again in front of her husband seemed to make it more painful.

Mark shook his head.

“You’re twisting my words.”

“Then tell us what you actually meant,” I replied.

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The Envelope on the Bench

Linda reached into the pocket of her robe and removed a white envelope.

She placed it on the bench beside her.

“Do you recognize this?”

Mark stared at it.

“What’s that?”

“Your handwriting.”

She held up the envelope.

On the front, in thick blue ink, were the words:

For Saturday. As promised.

Mark’s face went pale.

I’d received the envelope earlier that afternoon.

He had slipped it through my mail slot with a message saying it contained a small advance and that the rest would follow after our “private evening.”

I hadn’t opened it.

Instead, I’d brought it straight to Linda.

She had opened it in front of me.

Inside was $1,000 in cash.

And a handwritten note.

The rest comes afterward. Remember, this stays between us.

Linda held up the note.

“Would you like to explain this too?”

Mark stared at the paper.

“That’s private.”

Linda gave a short, humorless laugh.

“Private? You offered another woman money to betray our marriage, and you’re worried about privacy?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“You’re making this into something bigger than it is.”

I finally spoke.

“Mark, you knew my sister needed surgery. You knew I was worried about the expenses. And you tried to use that against me.”

He looked at me sharply.

“I was trying to help you!”

“No,” I said. “You were trying to buy my silence.”

The room went quiet.

Then Linda stood.

“That’s enough.”

Why Linda Had Agreed to the Plan

When I’d first knocked on Linda’s door on Friday evening, I’d been terrified.

Not because I’d done anything wrong.

But because I knew how painful the truth might be.

Linda had welcomed me into the neighborhood.

She’d brought homemade cookies when I moved in.

She’d introduced me to the other neighbors.

And she’d often spoken warmly about her marriage.

I hated the idea of being the person who shattered that picture.

When I told her about Mark’s invitation, she initially refused to believe me.

“Mark wouldn’t do that,” she whispered.

I showed her his messages.

She read them.

Then she read them again.

Her hands began trembling.

“How long has this been going on?”

“Since shortly after I moved here.”

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

“I thought he’d stop when I asked him to.”

Linda sat down at her kitchen table.

For several minutes, she didn’t speak.

Then she asked a question I hadn’t expected.

“Has he ever made you feel unsafe?”

I nodded.

“Sometimes. He keeps coming to my door even after I’ve told him to leave me alone.”

Linda closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, there were tears in them.

“I’m so sorry.”

I shook my head.

“You don’t need to apologize for him.”

She looked toward the window.

“I’ve ignored things for years,” she admitted. “The late nights. The strange messages. The way he turns his phone over whenever I walk into a room.”

I sat beside her.

“You don’t have to decide anything tonight.”

She nodded.

Then she looked at the messages again.

“No,” she said quietly. “But I do need to hear him tell the truth.”

That was how we came up with the sauna plan.

Linda would arrive first.

The spa manager, whom she knew personally, agreed to help arrange a private room reservation and ensure we could leave safely if the conversation became uncomfortable.

There would be no hidden cameras, no public humiliation, and no attempt to trap Mark physically.

Just the truth.

And the wife he’d assumed would never discover it.
